A Message from HHB Director-General Li Juei-Der
The HHB extends to you its warmest welcome to the Port of
Hualien.
The Port of Hualien is located on the Pacific Coast along
Taiwan’s eastern seaboard. Taiwan’s central mountains rise
to the west. The harbor was created to accommodate the
needs of modern shipping, with manmade breakwaters on the
eastern and western sides of the port. Over 45 years have
passed since 1963, when the Port of Hualien was opened to
international commerce and the Hualien Harbor Bureau was
established.
Over the intervening decades, the port has implemented four
major expansions, growing from an initial 3 berths to a
current 25 berths capable of handling 34 million tons
annually. In addition, the port currently has 6 warehouses
with 15 rooms, 38 storage yards, a temporary container
holding yard, 4 harbor tugs and one harbor shuttle boat.
Facilities are suited to demands and exceptionally fit to
meet the needs of Taiwan’s East Coast transportation and
commerce.
The majority of cargo handled is represented by bulk
commodities produced or required in the surrounding area,
including sand, gravel, cement and clinker, iron sand, wood
chips and coal. Working to deliver to shipping companies
and cargo owners faster, more comprehensive service, the HHB
initiated round-the-clock operations on 16 January 2004.
Such has made working through the Port of Hualien easier for
shipping companies and cargo owners and helped ensure that
material supply began meeting market demand. In 2007, the
Port of Hualien registered 19,381,469 million tons in cargo
handled and a total of 5,516 vessel entries / departures.
The port is today an even more important engine of economic
growth for the East Coast.
Looking ahead, the Hualien Harbor Bureau will continue
working within government policies to promote shipping
business growth. We will continue aggressive efforts to
grow business through the port and increase administrative
effectiveness. The Bureau will heed the concerns of its
neighbors and take effective measures to control pollution.
In the spirit of “customer first”, we will do our utmost to
provide the best and most appropriate services for
customers. We are also pressing ahead with the development
of a waterfront recreation area to fully leverage the Port’s
tourism potential. All efforts are geared to ensure that
the Port of Hualien matures into a multi-function port and
robust engine for East Coast economic growth and development
