Hualien Harbor was opened as an international commercial Port on September 1, 1963, is one of the four international commercial ports in Taiwan. After four stages expansion, Hualien Harbor possesses 25 berths with total 34 million tons capacity per year, 6 warehouses, 38 storage yards, 1 temporary container yard, four tug boats and 1 shuttle boat. All facilities and highly trained workforce collectively offer all necessary skills and needs to the international maritime industry and transportation and commerce in the east of Taiwan. The major cargos of this port are regional bulk cargo - such as sand, cement, clinker, mineral, wood chip, and coal. The volumes of loading and unloading have been growing since the port operations were available at nighttime in 2004. By 2005, the total volume reached a new record of 21,949,581 tons. In recent years, the financial crisis and global economic recession have affected the volumes of loading/unloading and the amount of calling ship. For expanding the business, Haulien Harbor Bureau will continue to recruit businesses and welcome private sectors coming to invest and creating business opportunities. At the present stage, Hualien Harbor is positioned as the main international port in the east of Taiwan, and a port for exporting cement and minerals (sand). It is also a multi-functional port for serving the purposes of tourism and recreation. Hualien Harbor will integrate local industries, onshore/offshore tourism resources, public and private sectors to develop the port resources and create win-win opportunities. Cross-strait direct sailing between Taiwan and Mainland China were activated on December 15, 2008. In response to the needs, Hualien Harbor Bureau has made complete preparation for the best services. In aspect of passenger services, Amway Group chartered passenger ships which transported over 16 thousand passengers to Hualien Harbor in 2009, and brought tremendous business opportunities to the local tourism industries. In aspect of cargo services, many cargo ships have also applied for direct sailing that not only reduces the cost and time in shipments but also promotes cultural exchange and development of tourism. Looking forward, Hualien Harbor Bureau will continue following the national policies to expand business, promote electronic business policies and activities, and provide the best and most appropriate services for customers. We will do our best to develop Hualien Harbor into a highly efficient and multi-functional port. ¡@ ¡@ |
